The 7UP Way

Our Story

Rooted in the Blue Mountains. Built to Last.

Anderson Land & Livestock sits at the base of Oregon’s Blue Mountains, just outside Pilot Rock, about 20 miles southeast of Pendleton. The ranch’s roots go back to the early 1940s, when Red Anderson first began running cattle here—back when the foundation of the operation was the running of wild horses in McKay Creek country.

When Red’s son Terry returned in 1973—fresh from college and military service—he brought the drive to grow the business. Working alongside his dad and brother, the Andersons expanded from 300–350 cows to a 1,200-head herd, added an irrigated farm, built a feedlot, and kept trucks, equipment, and people moving in all directions. It was a big, intense, family-run outfit.

Like many in agriculture, the Andersons faced the economic downturn of the ’80s with heavy debt. Hard decisions followed: selling marginal land, scaling back farming, and Terry’s brother moving on to start his own construction company. Downsizing wasn’t easy—but it created opportunity.

The Birth of the 7UP Bull Program

With a leaner operation, Terry and Debby doubled down on what they loved and did best: building a top-tier cow herd. An intense AI breeding plan laid the foundation for the 7UP Bull Program, created to produce bulls tough enough to thrive in the rugged terrain of McKay Creek—and anywhere else cattle had to work for a living.

Inspired by Ron Baker’s composite breeding ideas 35 years ago, Terry set out to create bulls that didn’t just survive in real-world ranch conditions, but excelled—passing on growth, durability, and performance to the next generation.

By 1989, they were selling 22 bulls a year. By 2000, that number had grown to 200–250 bulls annually, supported by 500–600 mother cows. Through good markets and bad, the focus stayed the same: breed cattle that help ranchers succeed, run the ranch with integrity, and never lose sight of the long game.

Built on Trust

Over the past 25 years, the Andersons grew a loyal customer base through straightforward business, an open-door policy, and a private treaty buying experience that allowed ranchers to select bulls in a relaxed, one-on-one setting. Every bull was cared for from birth to sale at the 7UP Bull Development Center in Stanfield, Oregon, where customers could see the program in action year-round.

A New Chapter

Today, I am proud to continue the 7UP legacy that Terry and Debby built from the ground up. After decades of running the program, Terry passed the reins to me so that 7UP Bulls could keep moving forward with the same commitment to quality, integrity, and customer success that defined his tenure.

I’m honored to build on the foundation he established—maintaining the genetics, attention to detail, and customer-first philosophy that have made 7UP Bulls a trusted name across the Northwest.

From the wild horse runners of the ’40s to the progressive SimAngus program of today, one thing remains unchanged: our dedication to breeding bulls that work as hard as you do.

Meet Max

I grew up with my boots in the dirt, my hands in the work, and a deep respect for the cattle business. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to work alongside some of the best in the industry, learning what it takes to raise cattle that aren’t just good on paper—they’re good in the pasture.

When the opportunity came to take the reins of the 7UP Bull Program, I didn’t hesitate. This program’s reputation for integrity, quality genetics, and customer-first service is exactly the kind of ranching I believe in.

My mission is to keep 7UP Bulls moving forward while honoring the history that got us here. That means listening to our customers, pushing our genetics to be even better every year, and making sure that every bull leaving this ranch is one I’d be proud to turn out in my own herd.

If you’re ever near Stanfield, swing by. I’d be glad to show you around, talk cattle, and share where 7UP is headed next.
